November Employee Spotlight

Sophie Worrell is a native of Austin and graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Geology. In her free time, Sophie enjoys taking her dog to the lake as well as going to the movies. She prioritizes spending quality time with her friends and family and throughout her life has displayed her outstanding athletic abilities through playing soccer, as well as running track and cross country. While studying at UT, Sophie conducted a great number of geological studies across five U.S. states and worked as a Geomorphology Research Assistant – studying land processes taking place in Northern Africa.

Soon after graduating, Sophie came on to W&M Environmental as a Staff Professional I. In less than 2 years at W&M, Sophie has contributed a great deal of value towards W&M’s remediation projects.  In her current Staff Scientist II role at W&M’s office in Austin, Sophie is tasked with writing reports for state regulatory submittal, remediation and compliance fieldwork, and data tabulation and evaluation. Sophie has conducted and prepared numerous Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, Affected Property Assessment Reports (APAR), and Groundwater Monitoring Reports. Her other experience includes groundwater sampling, installation of groundwater monitoring wells and soil borings, and remediation oversight. The wide range of projects Sophie has worked on is incredibly impressive for the short span of time she has been with W&M. A big reason for her involvement on so many projects is her eagerness to learn and her ability to learn quickly. She is recognized throughout the company for the quality of her work, and clients have started to take notice. Ross Tucker, Project Manager I in the Austin office, remarks of Sophie, “Sophie is ALWAYS positive. That positivity translates into her willingness and ability to learn and produce quality work. Sophie is the world’s greatest entry-level employee and has the desk plate to prove it!”

Sophie’s proudest accomplishment so far has been completing challenging fieldwork and receiving complimentary praise from an environmental auditor for her work in a uniquely challenging circumstance. She has found her most fulfilling work lies in writing APARs and mastering certain fieldwork. Sophie says, “I love the people at W&M, the camaraderie, and the dedicated attitude. I appreciate W&M giving me opportunities to experience different facets of remediation. I would describe W&M and its employees as ambitious, compassionate and of course, dedicated.”
