Tell us a bit about yourself:
I was born in Ironwood, Michigan, and grew up on a family homestead on Lake Superior. My family has been at that location since 1904 (there’s a creek that flows into Lake Superior named after my family). A true Yooper. I graduated in 1982 from Michigan Technological University with a B.S. in Mining Engineering, spent a couple of college summers working for the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the Twin Cities Research Center and started in the Environmental Consulting industry with Twin City Testing Corporation in 1984. Over the years, I worked for several other national and regional environmental, engineering, and consulting firms (many of which W&M and BIC consultants have worked at) and practiced as an independent consultant for several years. I entered the healthcare industry in early 2008 at Stericycle, Inc., and quickly transitioned to be their lead externally facing EH&S consultant.
What has been your most exciting project?
I’ve had many, many interesting projects but one of the most fun, energetic, and demanding was a business acquisition due diligence project in the PVC Pipe Manufacturing and PVC Resin (i.e., Vinyl Chloride Plant) industry. Besides the upfront risk management and environmental due diligence work and the post site visits/audits reporting work I traveled for six days all across the U.S. with the corporate chemical engineer (the acquiring company environmental leader) to plants in PA, FL and OK(2) on 9 flights working about 16-20 hours per day.
First would be being with my wife, two sons (now 27 and 24), my daughter-in-law anywhere, anytime, and especially on family travels and adventures. Second would be traveling the U.S. and to other countries with my wife, Connie. Third would be anything related to basketball: coaching, officiating games, playing, watching, and betting. Golf, boating, and bourbon would be in the next tier….
